Nearby Friends The App [[REVIEW]]

There are many things that facebook enables you to share with the entire world. On 17^th April, one more feature was added to that list, that is, “Sharing Your Exact Location.”

Facebook’s new Nearby Friends feature gives you a path to broadcast your location with the friends. If someone is nearby whom you want to meet up, you just have to tap a button and send the “Exact Location” with a complete detailed map.

Its another try by the company to inspire more users to connect offline. For some, this feature is simply a waste, as allowing Facebook to follow your movements is a deal-breaker.

Like every other thing it also has a plus point, and many people may also get benefits from knowing who among his friends is in the area. You can meet up for a party, a date, a business meet, etc. This feature was actually developed to give users control over what they share and with whom.

For those of you who are interested, here’s how this feature will work :-

ENABLING NEARBY FRIENDS:

You can enable nearby friends by clicking on chat menu in app’s upper right-hand corner. F the feature has been provided to you, it will appear there, above list of friends who are online. There’s a chance you may not have the feature yet because Facebook is rolling it out slowly and just US users for now.

Once you clicked Nearby Friends, you have to go through a four page tutorial which will explain you how to use the app and what it does, like every other feature. The tutorial’s last page is most important, that is where you will decide that who can see your location.

You are not allowed to share your location with Public or even Friends of Friends. By default, the privacy is set to friends but you can be more peculiar if you have previous groups saved on Facebook . For example, I can choose to share with my members by clicking on previously created “Digital Tips” group.

Once you enable the feature, you are active now and other friends can see your general location. You are allowed to see friends all over the friend.

CONNECTING WITH FRIENDS:

When Nearby Friends is on, you can see who is closer and a rough figure of how close he/she is. For example, it may say that you have a friend within a kilometer, but it won’t get more specific unless that person select to show his/her exact location with you. Next to it, will be time, commonly labeled in minutes, this will tell you when the user’s location was last updated.

If you wanna see more details of someone closer, simply click on his/her name in the list which will take you to the smaller version of the user’s profile page, where you can send him/her a message or even make a call same as you can do with facebook messenger.

If you wanna share your exact location with someone, you can tap the directional-arrow button to the right of that user’s name. This will share your exact location with him/her for a set time period. A short message of upto 40 characters can be included to your friend. Also you can set the time limit by using the timeline that pops-up.

If you are sharing your exact location with someone and you complete your work or if your mind changes before that set time is over, you can manually end the connection at any time. For this, once again click the directional arrow and choose “Stop Sharing”.

When someone shares his/her location, you will get a notification alert. If you tap the notification, you will see a map showing your friend’s exact location . His/her location will keep updating as long as he/she is sharing it with you.

You will only appear on a mapwhen you choose to share your exact location. The same is applicable for your friends.

DISABLING NEARBY FRIENDS:

If you no more wish to share your general location with friends, click on “Settings” button in the upper right-hand corner within Nearby Friends, and switch the setting to the off position. Facebook will not log your Nearby Friends off automatically, so if you don’t turn it off manually, your location will continue to share. You should be reminded of this by notifications.

CLEARING YOUR LOCATION HISTORY:

If you wish top clear your location history, which Facebook stores on his servers. There are pros and cons of deleting history. As the feature gets to know you, it will refrain from sending notification when you are at places you visits frequently, such as office and home. Deleting this knowledge will lead you to get more notifications.

Contradicting, not deleting means that FAcebook will know where you pend most of the time.

It isn’t that easy to delete your data..Click on Nearby Friends. Scroll down and click on “Activity Log” and then “Filter.” Now scroll down to “Location History.”

It requires many steps but this is where you can delete the Facebook data.

Nearby Friends may take some time to catch up. For starters, it needs to roll out to more users before people get value from it.

Facebook will be promoting the feature in news feed. You can keep an eye on stories that mention it.
